This list contains safety and comfort essentials that you should have before you set out on your first camping trip.
After purchasing my camper 13′, I spent hours researching all the items I needed to make my trips safe and easy. When purchasing a small trailer for travel, safety and comfort are the most important factors.

- Trailer Lock
A lock is essential if you park your camper in an area where it might be stolen. Coupler locks stop someone from hooking up your trailer to their car and then pulling it away. These locks are essential, but they’re not the only one you’ll need. As an additional safety measure, you can also learn more about hitch locks or wheel locks.
- Hitch Lock
Towing was new to me so I didn’t know that I had to lock my hitch to my vehicle. This is important when towing your trailer. It’s also essential if your hitch is left at your vehicle when you aren’t using it. Hitch theft is apparently a real thing!
- Wheel locks
Unfortunately, theft is a problem with small travel trailers. I recommend investing in a wheel lock unless your trailer is stored in a locked garage, or behind a gate on your home. This is a boot that fits on your trailer wheel. It prevents anyone from towing your trailer away. Combining this with a coupler lock will deter most thieves.
- Leveling blocks
Because sometimes, your built-in levelers don’t suffice to level your camper, leveling blocks are essential to keep on hand. This applies even when camping on unlevel ground. These are essential for every camper. This amazing set of leveling blocks comes with a carry case!
- Wheel Chocks
These are essential for any trip. These will prevent your trailer from moving if it is not connected to your vehicle. They come in many sizes and shapes, and can be made of different materials. These wheel chocks are very compact and have ridges that prevent them from sliding.

- Toilet Chemicals
Although my camper does not have a toilet, I do have a portable one that can fit in one of my storage areas. These all-natural probiotics are used to remove the smell and break down solids.
- Drinking water hose
You want to ensure that you only use the hose for these purposes when filling your holding tank and hooking up to city water. After using mine, I hang it to dry and store it in a plastic container under my bed.
- Water filter
Before you connect your hose to your water tank, or to connect to the city water at a campsite water source, it is a good idea to run all water through a filter. This filter is ideal for travel trailers and you want it to not be too heavy.
- Kit for an Emergency Roadside Assistance
An emergency roadside kit is essential for anyone who travels by car. It can make the difference between being able to get back on the road quickly and getting stuck for hours. The emergency roadside kit contains a jumper cable, first aid kit and tow rope. It also includes reflective warning triangles, a tire pressure gauge, and a tire pressure gauge.
- DampRid Moisture Absorber
You’ll need something to absorb moisture from the air. Campers can get moldy. Each bag is made up of 3 Fresh Scent hanging bags. They last approximately 2 months depending on temperature and humidity.

- Indoor Doormat
After realizing how quickly my trailer gets filthy, I bought an indoor doormat. After entering my trailer, I have a no-shoes policy. Many campers like an outdoor mat to place at the front door.
- Surge Guard
Many campgrounds can experience voltage fluctuations that could cause damage to your camper. It is important to have a surge protector between your camper and the campground’s power intake. The surge guard will ensure that you receive the correct amount of volts.
- Tire Pressure Monitor
I wanted to be able to travel solo as much as possible so that there were no distractions while towing my trailer. I don’t want to worry about my trailer tires being okay if they smell burnt rubber, or if things are bumpy. The tire pressure monitor includes 4 monitors that alert you to any problems with your tires, such as high temperature, fast leaks or low pressure.
- Water regulator
My filter thought it covered this, but I discovered the hard way that it was not sufficient. When you hook up to water from the city at a campsite, a water regulator lowers the water pressure.

- Jack & Lug Wrench
You’ll need a jack (small and portable) and a lug wrench (compact and foldable). These will be useful for any flat tires. These are also useful if you intend to grease your wheel bearings.
